Health Program

 Health Program

1. Roles of FESD in Health Programs FESD contributes to health improvement primarily through :

• Nutritional Improvement : By promoting sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, and the distribution of fruit tree seedlings, FESD helps improve community nutrition, especially for women and children.
• Clean Water Access and Sanitation : FESD advocates for improved water supply systems, critical for health and hygiene, which directly impacts the well-being of rural communities.
• Environmental Health : Reducing pollution, planting trees, and promoting energy-efficient household technologies contribute to cleaner environments, leading to improved public health outcomes.

2. Goals of FESD Health Program in Alignment with Strategic Plans
a. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
FESD’s health-related activities align closely with several key SDGs :
• SDG 3 : Good Health and Well-being
◦ FESD contributes to this goal by ensuring communities, particularly vulnerable women and children, have access to health insurance, better nutrition, and basic health services. The organization supports public health by promoting environmental practices that reduce disease risks related to pollution and poor sanitation.
• SDG 6 : Clean Water and Sanitation
◦ Through its advocacy for clean water access, FESD helps reduce water-borne diseases and improves community health, particularly in rural areas where clean water is scarce.
• SDG 1 : No Poverty
◦ By providing health insurance, FESD reduces financial barriers to healthcare, helping prevent poverty due to medical expenses.
• SDG 2 : Zero Hunger
◦ FESD promotes food security through agricultural innovations and community nutrition programs that ensure the availability of healthy food, particularly fruits and vegetables.
b. Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
FESD’s health-related actions support Rwanda’s NDCs, particularly in :
• Adaptation to Climate Change Impacts on Health
◦ FESD addresses health risks exacerbated by climate change, such as malnutrition due to agricultural disruptions, by promoting sustainable farming practices and improved food security.
• Energy Efficiency and Indoor Air Quality
◦ FESD advocates for the use of energy-efficient stoves and household technologies, which reduce indoor air pollution and prevent respiratory illnesses, especially among women and children.
c. National Strategy for Transformation (NST1 and NST2)
NST1 (2017-2024) : A Prosperous and High-quality Life for Rwandans
• FESD contributes to NST1’s social transformation pillar, which focuses on ensuring quality health services for all. By providing health insurance, promoting clean water access, and improving nutrition through sustainable agriculture, FESD is actively working toward better health outcomes for rural communities.
NST2 (Post-2024 Vision) : A Green and Resilient Economy
• FESD’s forward-looking health strategies, focused on climate resilience, are critical to NST2’s vision of a green and healthy society. Its emphasis on sustainable agriculture, clean energy use, and food security aligns with the national objectives of creating a resilient healthcare system.
3. FESD Health Program Activities
• Nutrition Improvement through Sustainable Agriculture : FESD distributes fruit tree seedlings and promotes sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing food security and improving diets in local communities. This reduces malnutrition and fosters long-term health improvements.
• Energy-efficient Stoves and Technologies : By encouraging the use of energy-efficient stoves, FESD improves indoor air quality, significantly reducing respiratory diseases associated with traditional cooking methods.
• Community Health Education : FESD uses its environmental education platforms to raise awareness about sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition, directly improving public health knowledge and practices in rural areas.
• Tree Planting for Clean Air and Environmental Health : FESD’s extensive tree planting programs not only combat deforestation but also improve air quality, reducing the incidence of diseases related to air pollution.
• Clean Water Projects : FESD advocates for clean water access, addressing a critical health determinant. Improved water supply systems directly reduce the prevalence of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea in rural communities.

4. Partnerships and Collaboration for Health Programs FESD collaborates with various partners to scale up its health initiatives :

Collaborations ensure that FESD’s health programs are integrated with broader national and international efforts to improve public health outcomes and resilience in Rwanda.
